Pages 155-160
Abstract
The morphology and the morphoneo tectonic evolut ion of the Island of Elba are unknown, beca use marine or cont inental post-orogenic sed iments are absent . The island rises abruptly from the sea with 3/4 of its area lying over 50 m above sea level and a coast line that is high along of its total length. The island offers the view of sunken and upraised landmass characterizing the submerged regions . The recogni t ion of relics o f at least 3 old planation surfaces and of terraces assumes them to be related with Pleistocene marine levels. Higher sur faces in western Elba , which were repor ted in previous wr it ings, may be connected wi th even older levels. Th e compar ison with similar situations in opposite Maritime Tuscany allows the hypothesis of recent morphost ructur al evolut ion of the island , which is st ill to be put to the test. Accord ing to this hypot hesis, the d ynamics of the island of Elba would have been characterized by the alternat ion of marine emergence and submergence, d ue to both the glaciocustat ic movemen ts of the level of the sea and recent tecton ic ver t ical movements.
