The geographer Aldo SESTINI, who died on February 24 1988, spent his long and fruitful working life as a professor in various universities and especially at the University of Florence. Although he played a role of primary importance in many fields of geography and cartography, the following pages mainly highlight his fundamental contribution to geomorphology and Quaternary geology, together with knowledge on Tuscany and other Italian regions – mainland, islands and Alpine areas – and on Greece and Albania. The author of much original research on the evolution of water networks in relation to recent tectonic movements, Sestini also published many interesting papers on glacial, volcanic and coastal morphology, geomorphological mapping and morphometry.
