Abstract

In the area where laterite was first described it consists of mottled saprolite, that is weathered rocks in place. This material is widespread in southern India and is still actively quarried. It is hard when excavated, and there is only a slight increase in hardening on exposure. The common Indian laterite used for building is different from the concretionary ferricrete, often called laterite, which appears to be formed in soil or transported material above the saprolite.
