Abstract

Some hypotheses are put forward in order to explain the disappearance of water redding, caused by the Alga Glenodinium sanguineum MARCH, in the Lake of Tovel. A lasting surface water cooling has been observed in the lake since 1965, when the water redding did not take place any longer. Water cooling is particularly evident in the layer from the surface to 2 meters of depth; when the lake reddened, on the contrary, higher temperatures occurred until 4 meters of depth. Our research has shown that the environmental conditions have affected phytoplankton and phytobenthos compositions, anyway without causing the disappearance of Glenodinium sanguineum, which still lives in the lake. A close correlation is put in evidence between historical information on water redding of the Lake of Tovel and the glacier retreat in the Alps.
