Abstract

In the hills near Collesalvetti, Pisa, Italy, two sections bearing Arctica islandica were studied for paleomagnetism; the two outcrops can be correlated both topographically and stratigraphically. Even in this instance Arctica islandica was found in the first part of the zone showing a reversal magnetization, more exactly during one of the two first subzones with normal magnetization. Such a result is in agreement with the findings for Ceppato section (a few km SW of the present section) (INQUA Guide Book, 1975) as well as for other Italian section (Santerno, Stirone, Valle Ricca, Vrica), where the first “Northern guests” always appear before 2 m.y. and during a normal magnetization, referable eithcr to the “X” and to the Réunion Subzone.
