This paper repor ts the results of researches ca r ried out in the hydrograph ic basin of the Arcidi aconata River in Basilicata (Southe rn It aly). The aim of resea rch is to give a quanti ta tive eva luat ion of soil erosion . Therefore a series of themat ic maps have been made as con – cern: geology , dest ination of soil use, climate, shape and development of the hydrographic network, gradient of channel slope , th us obtai ning a very det ailed d escr iption of the cha racters of th e basin. A seco nd ph ase of study co nce rns the mapping of ind ex of eros ion , d rawn up with the method sugges ted by CICCACCI, FKEUl & LUI’IA PAI.MIEKI ( 977). The suspende d sed iment yield Itonnjkmq ) has been chooses as ind ex of erosion: thi s index has been rel ated to the main geomorphic pa rameters. Through linear and mult iple regressions analysis, six eq uat ions has been obtai ned, among wh ich the eq ua tion with highest index of determination has been selected . The potential suspended sed iment of each partial basins higher to fir st order has been evaluated . Although the calculated ind ex only expresses an aspect of several erosive processes, th e choosen index, never less, seems to be the only parameter able to provide indications of quant itat ive feature. The final map ca n raprcsent a real aux iliary inst rument for te r ritorial programming and can represe nts the base for fur ther studies of applied geomorphology.
