Abstract

Since it is due to geology and Earth sciences generally, this map is the result of the formulation of only physical-type parameters together with other formulations obtained from parameters of a biological, anthropic and social-economic type it will contribute to a global document of environmental management. From a theoretical point of view the realization of this kind of map may be achieved by two different procedures: 1) by means of the analysis of the causes determining the landforms; 2) by studying the effects of the landforms themselves. The first method may be called integrated-physical environment analysis, the second is the geomorphological method. The method of integrated-physical environment-analysis takes into consideration all the various physical parameters favoring instability (e.g. lithology, acclivity, passive or active tectonics, climate, etc.) dividing them quantitatively into classes in a series of basic formulations and synthesizing them in a final document which we could define a map of integrated physical environment analysis. The geomorphological method consists of the study of the landforms, individualizing some of the causes which determined them and specifying the processes which tend to modify them. This results in a geomorphological map, a rather complex document difficult to read. From this a map of the dynamics of the landforms can be produced. If these two methods were perfect they would both lead to the same final result, that is to an environmental stability map. At the present state of research, it is necessary to investigate the two methodologies and compare the two kinds of maps: from the fact that the instable areas coincide or not, the instability may be confirmed or else a check by means of integrative researches is necessary.
