Abstract

Analysis of satellite images (Landsat 1 MSS, 4 TM and SPOT 1 XS), of U.S. Navy aerial photographs (TMA) and of U.S.G.S. maps were used to collect information on ice front, areal variations and rates of flow of ice shelves and ice tongues in the Terra Nova Bay area (Victoria Land, Antarctica). Comparison among different documents taken several years apart (from 1960 to 1990) allowed us to estimate ice velocities. The mean ice velocity of the ice tongues and ice shelves ranges from 30 m/yr to 900 m/yr. The highest velocities are found at the outer margin of Drygalski Ice Tongue.
