Satellite data are experimentally employed in an integrated study of the environment in order to overcome the sectorial limits of specialized investigation and arrive at an overall view of the phenomena influencing it. This type of study, which has already been theoretically to and methodologically carried out in various countries, is applied to the territory of the Campidano di Oristano (west-central Sardinia). Based on MSS bands of a Landsat image, the principal components of different basic elaborations, obtained by means of algorithms centering on the study of the vegetation mantle, are calculated. Subsequently, the territory is subdivided into 16 different classes through the application of a controlled classification Program. Data are interpreted visually according to a predetermined taxonomy and lead to the distinguish of geo-environmental units, sub-units and facies.
