Abstract

A pollen diagram is presented from the continental shelf of the Gulf of Cagliari. Four pollen zones are established, probably covering the period from the Early Holocene Preboreal to late Holocene Subboreal times. The zones show fluctuations among relatively closed vegetations and are delineated by the Quercus, Pinus silvestris-type, Alnus, Tilia, Betulaceae and Juglandaceae fluctuations. The first zone of pollen diagram probably developed under a relatively cool and wet climate that changed in a warmer and humid one, becoming in the upper zone less warm and humid.
