The analysis of the glacier movements with the satellite imagery has been investigated and a procedure has been set up to obtain for each glacier: the surface, the perimeter and the length of the glaciers’ snout. The surface of 720 glaciers of the Italian Alps has been estimated with an average deviation of 14 % and the surface evolution error is less than 20% for 82% of glaciers. From the movements and lengths of the glaciers snout it has been obtained that the annual surface fluctuations of 74% glaciers are detectable with the present spatial resolution in satellites images.
