The hanging glacier, just below the Whymper peak, which lies in the Grandes Jorasses massif in the Mount Blanc chain collapsed on 30th and 3 1st May 1998. The downfall took place at 4,100 meters above sea level and the ice block fell perpendicularly with a drop of 3,000 above sea level and stopped about 500 meters away from Ferret Valley floor. As collapses had occurred many times in the same glacier in the past, the glacier has been monitored and overseen by a team of scientists from Zurich Polytechnics since Autumn time. They think these phenomena are the result of the increasing of the alpine permafrost limit.
