Abstract

Let’s divide the trend of the glaciological research in Italy into three periods, deeply linked with the activity of the Italian Glaciological Committee. In the first one, called geographical-geological period, many works on the physics of the glaciers, appreciated also abroad, were performed. The Inventory of the Italian Glaciers was also compiled. Both the former and the latter were published on the occasion of the Geophysical Year. Then the glaciological research in Italy marked a slackening because of many reasons. In the fewer last years, Glaciology again became an important topic owing to the environmental global problems and to the Antarctic researches. Now, for supporting this new period, in Italy growth of connections with other scientific sectors, development of the links with foreign researchers, improvement of the scientific equipment, attention to environmental and applied researches, are essential.
